the end of the world would most likely come from an asteroid. asteroids actually do have the potential of ending life as we know it, and it can happen pretty much at any time. the good thing is, most asteroids can be detected long before they would hit, and no asteroid has been "scheduled" for 2012. smaller rocks and particles hit the atmosphare all the time, it's the big ones that are a threat.

btw, the earth will not, and cannot, crash into the sun. it's physically impossible and will never happen.

what will happen though, towards the end of the sun's life, it will start expanding, and within 11 billion years it will have consumed both mercury and venus, and if not consumed the earth, then at least completely burnt up everything on it.

The Mayan calendar does not say that. It doesn't even really end on that date. It just does something similar to an odometer changing over from 999999 to 000000. Or something like our calendar did when it changed from 1999 to 2000. There is no evidence the Mayans associated that with the end of the world. That is just a modern interpretation by some pseudo science weirdos. Real scientists who study the Mayans do not say that.

The Earth will not tilt 12 degrees on that date. There will be no earthquakes or whatever. There is no scientists who will say any of that. Only some new age weirdos. Like the ones who talked about the "harmonic convergence" in 1987 that was supposed to be the start of an unprecedented New Age of Peace. Did you notice a new age of peace starting in 1987? I didn't.

Hi Brown!

You're not alone in these fears, from what I've seen here on Yahoo, but there is not the slightest reason for thinking anything bad will happen December 21, 2012.

Look at it like this: Each year, 60 seconds after 11:59 p.m. on December 31st, the calendar comes to an end. What happens? A new cycle, in this case a new year, begins. The only thing that falls is the famous ball in Times Square.

Another cycle ended on December 31, 1999, a millennial cycle. Nothing happened, not even the widely-feared Y2K bug! (giggles)

With an exceedingly high level of confidence, I predict that all that's going to happen on December 21, 2012 is the winter solstice!

P.S. I just saw what Charlie wrote, and I assure you that it's rubbish. I doubt that even he is sure what "astrological convergence" means, but rest assured that there is not enough energy in any conceivable planetary conjunction that could cause the earth to wobble on its axis by 12 degrees. It's never happened and it can never happen.

According to the mayan calendar, we currently live in the 5th (or 6th) human kind era. The previous ones were destroyed either by floods, fire, earthquakes or other "natural" causes. Do you all think that mythology is JUST mythology or covered up truth for the plain human beings that wish to live a straight written down path in their lives?
The calendar says that there will be a huge destruction that not many of us will survive. And then it will be the beggining of the next human era. But forget about it and look around you for a change.
What is going on on earth? New viruses are appearing but we are not sure if they are biogenetic ones or just arised through evolution. What kind of air are we breathing? What kind of food are we eating? What kind of radiation are we receiving through all this blast of technology? The ozone layer that is destroyed, the greenhouse effect. We all hear those things for years. Are they just a myth or a warning? How much longer will we live without the consequences start to appear and be irreversible? Has anyone thought about all these or maybe you are all just thinking about how YOU shall live your lives better? We have contaminated EVERYTHING. We WILL destroy the earth ourselves.
What kind of secret projects are being planned or are already put in motion? Do you think that science fiction is far away from the truth? When Galileo Galilei announced that the earth was round they burnt him into flames, because the were so narrow-minded that they couldn' t just believe that this MIGHT be the truth and at least explore the possibility...

As far as the past civilizations are concerned, I suggest for those who do not know that much not to judge, as far as they are unaware of their history.
It is not coincidential that many of the depictions and engravements we have discovered in ancient Egypt show some kind of flying objects. It is not coincidential that many monuments cannot be copied and where aligned with the stars, as in the Great Pyramids. The Parthenon in the Acropolis in Greece is constructed with the so called "symmetrical assymetry", something that no current technology has managed to replicate.
Do NOT underestimate our past, because in this way we become blind. THEY want us to be blind, in order to manipulate us better; by Not leaving us to think!

Finally, it is too easy to destroy this already suffering world. A simple push of a button I would say and thousands of atomic bombs that are secretly constructed would blow the place into smitherings.

OPEN YOUR MIND! They don't want us to think anymore. They need us to be their playmobiles.

Have you ever heard of genoctony and population reduction?? What would be easier to manipulate? A thinking population or a languored one?

STOP JUST A MINUTE AND THINK ABOUT YOUR LIVES.

Do you feel that everything is as it SHOULD be? Or do you live in the way they want you to? Slumber..
Bottom line: keep the crowds uneducated, give them little and they shall be satisfied.
As far as your question is concerned:
I wish the Mayas will be wrong. But it won't be that much of a surprise if our world ended..BY OUR OWN DEEDS, however.

Keep seeking the truth. I don't mean that all the world is full of conspiracy theories.
BUT SOMETHING IS DEFINATELY WRONG..

The Aztex calender, the Hopi Indians, Nostradomus, and Edgar Casie, a modern day prophet, all predicted this day as the day of earthly upheavil. Astrological convergence will tilt the earth axis by 12 degrees, causing tidal, volcanic and continental plates to shift. The sun will not crash into earth. It will darken due to clouded atmosphere. Scarry? Only if we do not work together and help each other into new and peaceful existance. Keep the faith.

Do you really trust the calendar of a civilization which lived 500 years ago? There is no reason to think that anything will happen that day.

In order:

No.

Nothing except last-minute Christmas shopping.

No.

I won't give any explanations because you give no reasons in your question for thinking this. Others will make it perfectly clear.
