You asked about mudslinging.

Mudslinging is a good way for political candidates to gain an extra edge among voter support by knocking down their opponents by a couple of pegs. It is especially useful when candidates have either a very slim or very dismal record. Since such candidates can't tout any accomplishments, they have to throw a lot of effort behind making their opponents look bad - so they can portray themselves as the "lesser of two evils" and attempt to get more votes.

Mudslinging is getting much more complex and sophisticated. A lot of candidates will outsource their mudslinging operations to third party political organizations - such as Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, or Moveon.org. This gives candidates a distinct advantage - because they get all the polling benefits of mudslinging, and all the outrage and complaints usually get sent to the third party and not the candidate nor his/her campaign.

The KY mudslinging has already begun. I watched a debate between Bershear and Fletcher, but it will steadily grow worse as the two compete for votes closer to election time.
