BUT Mary Ingalls was never married or had children like she was shown in the series. Although she really was stricken blind. She never married her blind school instructor Adam. I guess he was made up for the show. Did the writers of the show just want Mary to have a happier story than being a spinster?

Yes. It was just a fabrication to keep her in the series and add a bit more story. She actually died a spinster.

The series was based on LIW's life, but not all of the things in the series really happened. No Albert, they never stayed in Minnesota for more then like 2 years, most of the books took place in Dakota Territory. The Garveys didn't exist, No Grace Edwards and her children. The main things in the show, Laura's family structure, Laura's marriage, the Olesons and Mr Edwards were part of the books, but for the most part, the show took a large artistic License

It definitely made better TV. I still love to watch that show. Nowawdays though, if I don't feel like crying, I'll watch something else. No one can make me ball my eyes out like Michael Landon could.
