As others have noticed, this usually means that a room looks simple, balanced, and elegant. Some of us use the word "Zen" to describe someone's lifestyle, even though we don't know much about the practice of Zen meditation.

For someone trained in Zen meditation, any kind of situation -- clean or messy, elegant or shoddy, balanced or chaotic -- may be just how the world is at that moment.

If we can relax and stay open in any kind of situation, then we can be at peace. And if our heart/mind is at peace, then our life can be of benefit to others. That would be pretty darned wonderful.

Sparse; barren; organised; neat; scary.

If you have made an effort to simplify your surroundings, it will probably have a quieting effect on your Spirit.

Many people call something "Zen" when they really are wishing you had more furniture and junk around so they could relax and not be afraid to spill something.

That Zen thing can get a bit too precious, in other words. Strive for moderate sloven surroundings where a person can kick off his sneakers without making you frown.

Zen also means the wide open spaces. I have such a room in my home where meditate and listen to music. It is up in the attic which measures thirty by thirty feet with natural wood floors, light blue walls, ivory coloured trim and a natural coloured brick chimney a tad off centre about a third of the way down the total floor space. Two windows on each end of the room completes the space. You can go up there and fall asleep in two minutes or listen to music for six hours. It is good to have a Zen room like that where you can leave your persona at the door when you enter. You know - stocking feet only kind of thing.

Zen sort of suggests those wonderful gravel gardens with old men raking the sand - like super big cat boxes.

Because it feels so right to the psyche, a little of the Zen thing can go a long way and most people because they do not really understand it overdo it. Use it the way you would curry.

Hope this helps provide a glimpse of how little you can do and still get it right. - C!

Like the bridge of the spaceship from Blakes 7. You need to drop the ribbed vlour pilot chairs and wobbling walls and embrace the 21st century.

I would imagine it as clean, clutter-free - do you have candles or insence or crystals out or anything like that? That's kind of Zen!
