I'm a paralegal (though not in Texas, so I can't answer questions specific to that state), and I really enjoy it. I like the law field, I'm learning something new every day, and it's a way to work independently in something that really seems to matter.

I did not have any specialized schooling; I got my start as a legal secretary and worked my way up. I'm not certified, but I could probably pass the test if I took it. You need to be an independent thinker, very organized, able to keep track of various details of cases, a self-starter, interested in what you're doing, and detail oriented. A good grasp of grammar, spelling, and legal research is definitely helpful.

Pay varies greatly depending on your area. Check a site like http://www.salary.com to see what the average is in your area, but recognize that you may not make that much right out of school.
