i'm using gigabyte motherboard.

Its is not the processor but the Motherboard that would support 1 GB of RAM. You need to check with the Gigabyte website. I would guess that a MoBo with a Pentium 4 socket would support at least 1GB of ram.

Check the specification sheet for your Pentium.
It will tell you the maximum RAM your PC will support.
My opinion - a Pentium IV should tolerate 1gb RAM and probably up to 2.

You can also go to the manufacturer's website and search for this information.

Most likely. I would double check the documentation on the motherboard or look it up online. They vary not only on how much memory each slot can hold, but how many slots there are total.
