I know its a noob questions but I'm gonna be buying an xbox360 and I want to buy everything the first time I get to the store.

The 360 uses both. The HD stores a lot more information, but the memory card is portable. Most likely you will use the HD far more than a memory card if you are only going to buy one or the other.

It also depends on what system you buy. The 'Core/Arcade' system doesn't have a hard drive, so it needs memory cards or you will have to buy a hard drive for it.
If you get either an elite or the premium/pro model, then you'll be fine.
But have you considered a PS3?

It can use both. Theirs the core version which requires a memory card aka a memory unit and theirs the proper 360 which comes with a hard drive so do not get the core version.

If you buy the pro or elite consoles, you will get a hard drive with it so you wont have to worry about memory cards. If you get the basic one, you won't get the hard drive and will need a memory card to save your game progress.

There are memory cards you can get for it, but the Hard Drive is detachable and can be moved to other systems

it normally uses a hard drive but lets say you want to take your game progress to a friends house they do have memory cards for that if you need them
