My baby is 7 weeks old and I give him warm water in a bottle everyday to help with hydration. Is it okay to strain some green tea leaves in there too?

Hello,

You do not need to give your baby water for hydration. Formula and breast milk have plenty of water in it for your little one to stay hydrated. Your baby most likely drinks about 16-24 oz. of formula a day which is exactly what is needed for a 7 week old.

Giving a baby younger than 6 months old water can interfere with his body's ability to absorb the nutrients in breast milk or formula. In rare cases, babies who drink too much water can develop a condition known as "water intoxication," which can cause seizures and even coma.

Babies don't really need water, or any liquid other than breast milk or formula, until after their first birthday. So hold off on giving your baby water until he's about 6 months old, and limit it to about an ounce or two at a time — ideally after meals. Also hold off on giving your baby green tea also. It is defiantly not a good idea.

NO!!! Who advised you to do that? You should never give a newborn anything other than breastmilk/formula.. especially caffeine! You shouldn't even give a baby water. A baby is getting hydrated from breastmilk or formula alone. If you give a baby water it can actually cause malnutrition and insufficient weight gain because the baby will mistake those empty calories as fullness. I think you need to consult a pediatritian.

It tastes good but there are many different types of green tea. You should go to a tea shop for samples or you could just buy some green tea. If you eat at an Asian restaurant there is a good chance that they will be serving green tea.

why on earth would you want to give your baby green tea???

What makes you think a baby needs that??

Answers here cover it - babies need nothing more than formula or breastmilk.

If you are breastfeeding, then the foremilk provides all they need for hydration.

if you are formula feeding, then picture how much water you put in the bottle before adding the powder! That is all they need!

Please stop giving your poor little baby this stuff that they don't need.

NO!!!!!!!! babies should only have milk! If not breast milk than formula but nothing else until they are at least 4-6 months old. Their tummies are so small that anything they take into their system that is deficient in nutrients is taking away from their nutritional needs. Even water. You are risking malnutrition. That and the caffeine in green tea is too stimulating.

Your child does require more then 40 ounces of formula a day. You could be overhydrating your baby and that can cause serious problems like ear infections and in uber bad cases, deafness. I thought the same thing as you when my son was born but my nutritionist set me straight.
