I'll need to put a new rear tire on a street bike soon (R1), I do lots of mountain riding and love getting into the corners better than speed.

How much should I look to spend for a new tire? Is it worth it to pay 50-100-200 more for a fancy name brand kinda thing, or would I not be able to feel a difference?

Depending on how you ride will decide the price of your tires. I would not go with a cheaper tire than say a Donlope Qualifier. I just got a set of them about 500 miles ago and would definatly not recommend them to anyone, but they at least a decent set of tires if you do not ride your bike too hard. I always used Michelins before and will go back to them after this set is used up. The problem I have with the qualifiers is that they are blistering at the edges. I have not noticed any loss of traction but I know it must be close if they are blistering after a hard run on some curvy roads. The pilot powers seemed to have the best traction of all of the sets of tires that I have burnt thru over the years and they last fairly well (for a performance tire). Please think about how you ride the bike and the bikes power before you buy a set of tires, you get what you pay for.

Unfortunately for you the only sizes available for your bike tend to be the expensive ones. I seriously doubt that you could find any rear tire for less than $140. If you would like to try an inexpensive brand just to see how it would last and perform go to your local bike shop and ask the parts guy to check and see if Chen Shin (Taiwanese tire company) has anything to fit your bike. They are one of the better known inexpensive tire brands.
