I am 12, but I decided to pass out candy instead of trick or treating. My first 2 trick or treaters were eighth graders from my school, but they just came with a pillowcase and that was it. They were dressed in normal clothes. That was it! No costumes! Their faces weren't painted or nothing. I couldn't believe it though, it used to annoy my mom and I seeing those teenagers knock on our doors with maybe a bandana and a little face paint, put absolutly no effort got me fired up. I gave them candy but now I regret it. My brother saw them from inside and he came out and told me that I should have kicked them off out yard with no candy. If someone like that knocked on your door on halloween what would you do?

Its tough because they go to your school. Usually I would tell them to go away, but then you face revenge. Do you really want them to come back and egg your house or something? Just give them the candy and tell them to make a bigger effort next time.

I have 3 kids. We get more candy on Halloween then we actually consume, especially the crappy candy. So I save up the candy that nobody wants for that entire year and give it to the kids that didn't bother to dress up or are older than 13. I give out the good candy I buy for Halloween to the rest of the kids that bothered to dress up or at least try and to all kids 13 or under. I give extra to kids with awesome costumes. :)

I guess this makes me passive aggressive, but they think I gave them candy.

See for me its the time they came by. I don't want to tell a lil kid later on that I have no candy b/c some 12 yr olds came by. However--if they had come at 830, and the usual kids had already gone home--I would have cleaned out whatever candy I had left. I hate having tons of leftover candy. My boss told me he wasnt letting his oldest girl go trick or treating (shes 13) and I told him to tell her to come by my house at 830 and I'd give them all that was left over.

Now if there is a 12 yr old who came escorting a younger sibling or dressed up, I'd definitely give them candy. But just in regular clothing? You have to try!! Though I remember when I was 12, I went to my friends houses if we knew their mom was giving out good candy--we'd go up 4 or 5 times with groups of kids so that she couldn't give candy to the kids and then refuse to give us some. But we did always dress up. Even if it was just in all black with a black bandana (I called myself "a shadow").

I agree they had no spirit, but it's OK to give them candy. I think trick - or - treating is acceptable up until 8th grade. After that, they're too old. Still, my rule is that if you're old enough to go without a parent, you're too old to go at all. That's because the unsupervised ones are the ones vandalizing property and causing trouble. I guess you were in a quandary though, because if you didn't give them candy, they may have vandalized your property (as in the phrase, "trick or treat"). I say if they come back at all next year, tell them no candy for kids under 13.

Typical rule around here is if you are over 11 you cant participate in trick or treat only in the spooktacular parade.

I would tell them to get lost.
