How does the process work of gaining permission to record somebody else's song? Also, what if you plan on adding some of your own lyrics and music to a song? How does that work? Do you need to get permission from the songwriters with regard to the new material? Any info on this would be appreciated.

You need to contact the BMI or ASCAP and find out if they are willing to let you use it, and what the going fee is to cover it. If you have a change, the writer also usually has creative control. Sometimes, though, it's the record company/producer who has the creative license.

Write the publisher and tell them what you want to do and try to get permission from them.
