I did it using the VGA cord mentioned above. I should forewarn you that it seems that your laptop needs to support the monitor being used. I just bought a widescreen monitor for my laptop, but I don't have the correct resolution setting on my laptop to use a widescreen, so on the LCD monitor everything gets stretched out. It's frustrating when working with graphics or documents, because everything is skewed.

Its easy if both your laptop and LCD have VGA ports on them. Then you just need a VGA cable. There are some VGA to composite converters that aren't too expensive. Then you can plug it into anything.

You want to remove the screen from your laptop and use it remotely?

Or you want to connect a separate LCD screen to your laptop?
