Using filter media or gravel from an established aquarium is a good way, since it adds more bacteria at the start (you can put the gravel in a mesh bag in the filter if it doesn't match your own). The more you have initially, the more you'll have after each reproduction cycle. Just make sure your "source" aquarium is problem-free - no diseases, parasites, or algae problems. Unless you're very familiar with your pet store, this may not be the best choice.

Another way to speed up the cycle is to increase the water temperature. The warmer the water, the faster the metabolism of the bacteria, so they reproduce more quickly. If you can do this, and to what temperature you can increase the tank will depend largely on what (if any) fish you currently have in the tank.

there are products available called nitrasob
I've used them and found them pretty useless
the only sure way to remove nitrate from a tank is to do 25% water changes once a week

if your looking to speed up the cycle the best thing to do is goto a good pet store and buy a used filter pad from them.
thats the best way.
