I think the Girl Scouts are a very POSITIVE group for girls to be involved it... especially in such a negative world!

Girl Scouts are also very involved in:
- recycling
- helping the environment
- building confidence & self-esteem in girls
- building friendships and bonds
- teaching good character
- teaching soo... many other postive things...

I think it's great for young people to have an interest which a) helps them socialise b) involves physical exercise c) gets them off the internet/games console. My sons aren't into the scouts, but they are both in a football team, which has helped them grow up and learn valuable lessons about team work. Anything that gives them the chance to develop valuable life skills, whilst having fun and receiving recognition for their efforts, should be applauded. I was in the brownies (English girl scouts) as a child, and I still remember lots of the things I did there- that's when I first started cooking and entertaining!

Girl Scouts is great program for girls of all ages. As a scout leader, I focus mostly on teaching the girls the importance of respect for others and themselves and hard work. We do alot for our community, such as clothing drives, food drives, visiting nursing homes, planting flowers and cleaning up trash. It is not all just fun and games.

Scouting build character, and teaches the basic fundementals in life. Girl Scouts teaches many diffrent things, and they don't care if you are black, white or green; believe in Buddah or God; are disabled or not. I think that more girls should be in scouting because this world is lacking in values.

A lot better and more diverse than the boy scouts. I was a girl scout for a while. My cousin still is and is a troop leader.

It was a fun and enriching experience. I learned about different cultures, countries, how things are made, what people's jobs are like, how to do things by myself, etc. I was a Girl Scout for 8 years and earned hundreds of badges. Scouting is great for both girls and boys.

My outsider viewpoint is that they're better than the boy scouts in that they are not as doctrinaire and are more inclusive. They give lip service to "empowering" girls &etc. but I don't know what that means in practical terms. I like that at least they give girls an "opt out" in their pledge (from their website):

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God* and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

* The word "God" can be interpreted in a number of ways, depending on one's spiritual beliefs. When reciting the Girl Scout Promise, it is okay to replace the word "God" with whatever word your spiritual beliefs dictate.

I think it is a wonderful resource for our future leaders. By being a part of the group, I get to surround my daughters with other people who reinforce the way I want them to grow up:

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

I was in the camp fire girls and loved it. I hated it when we moved to a rural area and all there was was 4-h. I have quite a few friends who lead girl scout troops and they do amazing trips with their troops like backpacking, camping, and rafting trips. One of my friends leads a troop of older teens, and they've gone to the Alps hiking a few times.

The girl scouts don't advertise it, but they're not homophobic like the boy scouts. They don't kick out girls or troop leaders who "may" be gay. The girl scouts really are good role models--if anyone's perceived to be different, they don't kick them to the curb.

I was in GS for a long time when I was younger. Now my daughter is in it and I am one of the co-leaders of her troop. She has a great time and enjoys everything. And the things I learned as a girl scout I can now pas them doen to my daughter and the rest of the troop.

my question to you is What do you think of Girl Scouts?

I went on a church retreat with my youth group and Girl Scouts were staying at the same place we were and they complained that they smelled gas and called 911 and the fire dept. came and there was no sign of gas at all but they did find out that the basement of the place, where all the bedrooms were, sprinkler symstem didn't work. So they made us move all there matresses up onto the 2nd floor (because the basement was a fire hazard) at like 11 o'clock at night after we just came back from a day of skiing so we were really tired. And then we couldn't go in the basement at all and the game room and tv room were down there so it was boring for a while. Then everyone except for us left because of the fire hazard so then we had the whole building to ourselves and it ended up becoming one of the best trips we've been on but now the building has sadly burned down :(. so Girl Scouts either suck, or they're amazing because they know how to clear out i building. i don't really know. But Thin Mints are always good :)
