I pushed my son for maybe five minutes before he was out. I hear about women pushing for hours and hours. Why is that? I mean, what is wrong medically that the women have to push for so long? The doctors thought I'd have to push for a long time because he was sunny side up [his face was towards my butt] but like I said it really wasn't bad for me.

I'm pregnant again and this is the first place I've ever heard of women pushing for long periods of time. What causes it? Is there anything I can do to prepare myself? I just worry about this next birth. If you had to push for a long time, obviously it was frustrating, how did you cope?

Thanks!!

I should also add that it took my doctor 1½ hours to get to the delivery room from the time I was [and felt] ready to push so could that have something to do with it?

None of my friends have ever had to push for hours. [We talked about this the other day.] I think the longest one of us pushed was a half hour. It's just strange to hear of women pushing for so long.

My3Boys--It's been a while since my son was born. All I remember was them telling me he was sunny-side up and I'd have to push for longer. I just assumed he'd be facing down towards my butt. He probably was face up if that's unusual. The doctors made a big deal about it!

you got lucky...i had my frist child in 2000 and i had push for 2 1/2 hours but that was because she had the cord rapped around her neck 2 times and she came out with a broken collarbone ...that she had a hard time coming out..i was mad i keeped screaming get her out and they just kept saying push.but that was my frist child i really didn't know how to push.i know that it was supposed to come naturally but i didn't know how to push..i had my second child in five hours only push for 5 minutes and my youngest child my water broken and 2 hrs later a had her and i laugh at the mid wife and when i did i push her out just like that. i wouldn't worrie they say that your frist child is always longer.

it doesn't mean that if you are pushing for anytime doesn't always mean that something is wrong.

i would take a labor class that helps you to get prepare for the labor it teaches everything that you need to know to have in easier birth..

oh yeah congratulations on the pregnancies

I think the time you waited on the doctor could have been a factor. I don't really know though. I have had friends who spent a lot of time pushing (like 3 hours) and I don't know how they did it. I think for some people it just takes longer. I don't think that there is any thing medically wrong with them. I think that people like us are just lucky. With both my kids I think I pushed maybe 3 times and the baby was out. With my second child the doctor piddled around too and didn't even make it to the birth. My son was delivered by the labor nurse.

That's unusual to push for so little of time, but some women are lucky like that. I pushed for about an hour MAYBE. But as I'm thinking about it I think it lasted about 40 some odd mins. My son was a big boy (8.13, 21'') and I ripped pretty badly. I ripped and had an episiotomy (however you spell it). It took them 45 mins to sew me up.

I guess it depends on genes and how well you are pushing.

I pushed for an hour with my first because he was face up and we had to get him to turn so he would come out, I pushed twice with the second one, and about 4 times with the third! He was face up and didn't turn, so it took me a couple extra pushes.

Nothing has to be 'medically wrong' for you to have to push for hours. It depends on the progression of each labour, how efficiently the woman is pushing, etc, etc, etc.

BTW - the baby's face is supposed to be towards your bum. Sunny-side up would be facing up.

You may experience a similar birth to your first this time around...or you may have to push much longer. Every labour and delivery is different.

i don't think there is a medical reason for it just the way it is my mom pushed me out in just four pushes and my bro like an hour. They do say that light to moderate excerise helps your birth

I think it simply has to do with the size of the baby vs. the size of you pelvis and vaginal opening....the more room, the faster they come. Also, some women's pushes may be 'harder' than others, helping speed things along.
