Why haven't they got cheerleaders? But they did in their early days, so who were these ladies?
"As the National Football League's first official cheerleaders, they arrived the same year John F. Kennedy became president and went away the year a man walked on the moon. In many ways, their existence was also symbolic of the type of changes that would characterize that turbulent era.

But most of all, the cheerleaders, who were all Robert Morris Junior College (now Robert Morris University) students, represented the Steelers and the southwestern Pennsylvania hometowns from which most came. In all, nearly 60 women were Steelerettes. "

I know that since I have been following the Steelers from the early eighties, cheerleaders did not exist. I remember the Terrible Towel being the mascot at the first game I went to in 1991.

The Pittsburgh Steelerettes were the first cheerleading squad in the NFL, serving as the cheerleaders for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1961 until 1969. The Steelers believe that the focus should be on the game and nothing else. I believe its because it's a lack luster city and they want to keep it that way. The Browns, Packers, Bears, Lions, Jets and the Giants all do not have cheerleaders. A cheerleaders main duties is cheering during the football games, the cheerleaders have other responsibilities. Nearly every team member is available for appearances at schools, events, conferences, etc., for a set fee.

It's not uncommon. As of 2005 - Cincinnati, Cleveland, NY Jets, NY Giants, San Diego, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Minnesota, and St Louis, and Tampa Bay didn't have cheerleaders either - I think that might have changed - as I'm pretty sure Tampa Bay has cheerleaders now.

Yet, these theams still have some of the greatest fanbases in the NFL. I guess it's because the NFL is football - not cheerleading. Cheerleading is something girls do in highschool.

the steelers have never had cheerleaders. it's all about tradition for the steelers ownership. it's the fans who give support. for the steelers, cheerleaders are just a distraction

I'm not sure but I've been told they have the most female fans, so you would think there would be a lot of woman that want to be their cheerleaders

Seriously, there are like 6 hot women in this area, and none of them are steeler fans.

Steely McBeam might try to molest them?

I dunno...They're not really necessary for a team...Green Bay doesn't have their own, they use cheerleaders from local colleges at the games...

(Ann...Tampa has cheerleaders...)

there are a couple of other teams. the steelers don't have cheerleaders because the franchise can't find 10 women unwilling to step away from the buffet line (or out of the trailer parks) to stand on the sidelines.

They don't want them. They feel that the product on the field is what should bring you to the game, not woman in skimpy outfits. that is probably why they have the largest female fanbase in the league.

I know the Browns, Bears, Lions, Packers, and Giants also don't have cheerleaders.
