The Netherlands is a member of the Schengen zone, along with 27 other European countries from Greece to Iceland. Once you are inside this zone, you don't need a passport to travel around.

However, the UK and Ireland alone are not members, meaning you need your passport to enter Schengen.

there is not any threshold on how long left you have, your passport in simple terms in simple terms desires to no longer have expired. Your passport would desire to be in date for the whole length of your holiday, or you might have problems with customs and immigration officers at the two end. if your passport runs out until now you come back, you could nicely be saved at customs upon returning.

Of course you need a passport. You will be refused entry into the Netherlands without one.

The only country you can travel to by ferry from Britain without a passport is Ireland.

Just in case, I'd bring my passport. It's not worth the risk.
