Hanks, with Deniro as a close second. Both have played a variety of characters quite believeably, Hanks has shown a talent for offbeat characters that play to the audience pathos. Deniro has also play a variety of convincing roles, but fails to project the kind of charm that works for Hanks.
Travolta is generally type-cast as an arrogant character, wheather in comedic or serious roles. He generally plays the kind of character you don't want to believe in.

From these 3, have to go with Hanks slightly over Deniro. But the best living American actor is Robert Duvall or Morgan Freeman.

Tom Hanks - 1st Place (Run Forrest, Run!)
Robert Deniro - 2nd Place (You talkin' to me?)
Travolta - 3rd Place (Oh, Sandy!)
If they were in a dance contest, or singing, John Travolta would win.
If they all were in a last-man standing cage match, then Robert DeNiro would win.
But you said acting --- So Tom Hanks all the way.

Hanks by a landslide. Why is Travolta even in the running? He's a good actor, but not top 3 by any means.

Can already envision all the thumbs down, but I'm going with Hanks.
Pure, all-around actor, the man's at the top of the list. From great work in a sitcom (Bosom Buddies) to awesome work in comedies (Big, Splash, Nothing in Common, etc) to Academy Award winning dramatic work (Forrest Gump, Philadelphia) to voice work in both Toy Story flicks and Cars, the man's been unreal across the board.
Travolta has been okay in a handful of films (Grease, Pulp Fiction, Hairspray and Swordfish), horrible in a lot of films (Wild Hogs, anyone?) and is really just box office candy anymore.
DeNiro, while he may have the top five single performances between the three (for my money, Godfather, Raging Bull, Deer Hunter, Ronin and Cape Fear were his best), he's also spent a great deal of his career playing a parody of himself.
Okay....bring on the 'thumbs down', DeNiro fans. I'll take it from you. But anyone who thinks Travolta even belongs on the list is pretty much a moron.

This is for Steve J:
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks (born July 9, 1956) is an American two-time Academy Award-winning film actor, Emmy-winning director, voice-over artist and movie producer.
Hanks worked in television and family-friendly comedies before achieving notable success as a dramatic actor in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. He is also one of only two actors in the history of film to have seven consecutive US$100 million blockbusters, the other being Tom Cruise.
See, we can all use Wikipedia! Yay!
Sorry, I had to say something.
