We are thinking of moving to Seattle from the eastside of Washington. Just wondering where is the best place to live outside of Seattle? The safest, least expensive, etc. I was looking at Craigslist and rent is crazy over there. My house payment here is only $900 so Im worried we wont be able to afford to live there.

My guys work is based in Bellevue but his work is all over the place. So we were thinking of Kent or somewhere that would be cheaper to live but still nice and safe.

Thanks for all the info!!!

You will find housing much more expensive over here compared to eastern Washington. The median house price in King County is over $400,000.

Finding the right place to live will be a balancing act between how much money you are willing to spend, and how far out you are willing to go.

If you are willing to be somewhere that would be a 1 hour or more commute, then you'll get some more reasonable housing prices. Kent and Puyallup are good areas to look in the south. You might consider Duvall, Carnation or Monroe in the east/northeast, and Arlington, Marysville and Stanwood in the North. But that commute can be quite a tradeoff.

Also, you didn't mention kids. School districts are another thing to be considering when choosing a place to live if you have kids. In general, the better districts are in demand, and housing prices reflect that. But you can find good schools in many areas. And of course, you can get great teachers at schools that don't necessarily "show" well on the rankings.

Good luck!

I personally don't care much for Kent & Auburn and they have a large drug problem. Bellevue is about the most expensive part of WA. When I worked there I just bit the bullet and lived on the Issaquah plateau cuz it's pretty there and safe, but not cheap. Anything off the 405 is going to be filled with traffic so it depends if he has to work reg hours. Good luck, at least you get to live in Western WA!!! I can't wait to move back home!! :)

As far as prices go, the further south in King County you go, the less expensive it is. However, this also means more seedy neighborhoods.
Renton is a good place in the middle where it's not terribly expensive but there aren't many bad neighborhoods either. The Benson Hill neighborhoods are some of the better ones in Renton.
