Skip Dell... You're paying for "new" and receiving refirbished parts in some cases. That and you're adding $2-300 for the name alone.
IBM is the (generally) top of the line, and tend to hold their value *extremely* well. They are, however, 20-50% more expensive than a "comperable" other brand laptop. (Through "Lenovo," which is the company that sells IBM for IBM.)

For the rest, I've had good experiences with HP/Compaq and Toshiba.

My dads toshiba treats him well. I think Dell, IBM, or Sony are all fine machines though. Macs are also great computers, and the software for them, is just as widely available now as they are for the PC...more and more users are switching to macs because they last longer and are more reliable...this is just my experience, as a long time computer user for both mac and PC.

*stay away from HP, Compaq, and Gateway though, and you'll be ok..

As w/ any computer, the better you maintain and take care of it, the longer it will last you.

I have a Dell and it's been great! I had a toshiba before that but it only lasted two years before the screen went out on it.

Hope that helps!
