Is there any tactful way to mention the horse, or can I leave that part out?

Well, the horse WAS a senator... I'm pretty sure he was the first animal to be in an official position! You might add that.

Why do you need to be tactul? Calligula doesn't care what you say -- either now, or then. So go ahead and include the horse along with all the other goofy things he did. The strangest part of the whole thing is that people accepted it.

I don't see any way to leave his horsing around out of the paper if you are doing a comprehensive report. Now you just know I wanted to say something about my horse, don't you?
I won't, I won't......mmmmmmmm....{Sitting on my hands to keep from touching keyboard.}

Mentioning the horse is important, because it illustrates that Caligula was insane as well as cruel and tyrannical. I would use a neutral expression such as: "he made love to his horse."

I'd leave it out.

On a side note, before I knew about the movie Caligula, I thought it was just another ancient epic (like Gladiator or Ben-Hur). I watched the clean version and it was a huge waste of time.

Just say they were in love. That makes everything okay.
