They aren't broken...

And when a woman gets her tubes tied, or a man gets a vasectomy, most people don't call it getting fixed! (Some do...including my tubes-tied mom...haha.)

Why is it called that?

We say we got the dog "fixed" because it changes his behavior so he is less aggressive (lacks testosterone).

I just had a vasectomy. I call myself "fixed" just as a metaphor. My stuff still works all the same for what I need it for (pleasure), but it will never get a woman pregnant, and that is what I want to avoid.

I laughed when I read this question. I do wonder how that got started, and I do refer to people getting 'fixed'. People generally get offended but it is one and the same and it slips out. I would be interested in finding this out myself.

Thats a very good point, if you disable or remove a part from your car, you are certainly not fixing it, how about functionality reduction or just plain broken?

I think it is that with humans, people may want to reverse the procedure at a later date. You can untie a knot. With pets, it is highly unlikely that you'll ever have that operation reversed. You're fixing a pet population problem, you're fixing their reproductives the way we want them-useless.
