I don't live in America but it is because its full title is the US of America (USA), the US is just a shortened version rather than saying that everytime. Also, the US of America was originally called just America, the US part was added when it was vowed that there should be a stop to the North and South divide, as the North was generally a richer, more propsperous area, whereas the South more rundown, and there was also a lot more racial tension and prejudice happening in the South.

Probably for the same reason that people from the U.K. aren't called UKians, because it doesn't roll off the tongue very easily and also because it sounds dorky!

Dearie,
People who live in the US are properly called US citizens. "Americans" can refer to anyone in North, Central or South America, unless one is completely clueless as to the world around them.

America is a continent and the USA is just one country in that continent. USA is an acronym. Other countries are not called by their acronym.

Well, we have a cruddy name, huh. If New York, the city, can be in New York, the state, then why can't America, the country, be in America the continent. Then we could be Americans.

The USSR was a cruddy name, but Russia is fine. Why can't we have an aesthetic name, too, instead of the dumb political one? United Statesian is proper, but it sounds like heck.

U.S. isn't even a word. How do you make a derivative out of two initials? Every other country is called by a word in their country's name. Should we call British people UKians? Or in the old days of the USSR USSRians? We are called Americans because "America" is the main part of the Country's name. It is the United States of AMERICA.

Because US is part of the abbreviation USA which stands for United States of America. Hence "Americans".
