One example. A girl on Yahoo Answers told me that she was going to Yale Medical School. She responded instantly to my messages on Messenger. I didn't believe her so I asked her a simple question: which state is Yale located?

She didn't answer in time. I think she had to google it. I also asked obvious questions that a med student should know and she got really defensive.

What other techniques do you use to determine if the person online is genuine?

Liars often get so tangled in their lies that they forget what they've said.

Try and get them to get confused about what they're saying - if they know their sh*t you'll know it. If they don't, well, it's the same as your qn about the location of Yale.

It's hard to say what to ask, without knowing the person in the slightest, but it will come to you as you're talking. You seem to already have the ability to investigate, and also a somewhat suspicious nature (always a good thing).. so you'll work it out better than anyone can advise :)

It can be hard to tell. Multiple pictures of themselves, what they say doesn't sound too fishy.

I know the site ( http://yuniti.com ) has a validate ID program. It costs like $1 and you can tell that the person is who they say they are.

seems dumb. maybe she was working on something and just didn't respond fast enough. There is no way to tell if the person is genuine or not....

some times a real person may seem fake...it depends on how dull a person is...
