That people get the government they deserve? If so, what did the citizens of the United States do that was so horrible for us to have the mess we do now?

I can think of a few things, apathy is one, self service is another. Accountability or lack of is another. Complacency and utter lack of holding our elected officials accountable to the will of the people by re-electing them after continuous scandals and criminal activity because they are in "our" party is probably the biggest reason we deserve the government we have.

Apathy and selfishness.
I think as a country we have stopped caring so much about our neighbors. Heck, how many of us really know our neighbors. We're all absorbed in our little worlds, we think that it's us against everyone, we're keeping up with the Joneses and drowning in debt.
