Hard drives are what store data for your computer. They are also what your operating system is stored on. You really can't think of it as memory though..
Hard drives use a magnetic recording technology to store data on a platter. The hard drives spin at 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm s(average hard drives..although there are faster). While they spin a magnetic needle can write and read data. This is how you save files onto your computer..As well as load your operating system when your computer turns on. The hard drive stores all the data.

Hello,
(ANS) A hard disk drive is nothing more than a storage container, you can think of it as just like a big electronic filing cabinet. The hard drive itself is a small component (usually square in shape) that usually contains several small disks or platters inside, these disk spin in a vacuum. HDD's have a read write head that floats only microns above the disk platters, the disks are coated with a magnetic material and this has to be electronically prepared by formatting the disk. Once the disk has been formatted it can store computer files on its surface. This is done by the read write head, which writes (saves files) files to the disk or fetches existing files by reading them.
**DON'T confuse a laptops memory (mind) with its storage ability
**memory or working memory holds files & process's in a temporary space, this is required by both windows & programs (not to be confused with hard disks)
**CPU or processor is the heart that pumps the blood around the body or the engine that delivers the power (processes commands & information) to the wheels.

Goodness me what a lot of technical answers. I'll try something different...
Imagine that your PC is an office in a box. You have an office worker (processor), a window (monitor), some workspace e.g a desk (RAM or sometimes known as memory) and a filing cabinet (hard drive). You communicate with your worker by using the mouse and keyboard and it does all of the work, including fetching files from your filing cabinet and opening them up on the desk. The bigger your filing cabinet, the more files you can store and access. The bigger your desk, the more files you can look at at once.

The hard drive is sometimes referred to as the root and I'm sure you know what a root is -- all things begin at the root.
The hard drive stores your operating system which runs any and all programs you install. It will then store any and all files you create. However, we are encouraged to keep copies of any files, on separate storage, that are important to us. When the hard disk crashes, and someday it will, and you won't know when, everything is lost.
Keep all your CDs in a safe place and keep a record of the CD product key numbers as you install programs.

If you need to ask this question then follow these simple but helpful steps:
1. Put your pc / laptop down
2. STEP AWAY FROM THE PC / LAPTOP
3. Never go near one again!!!
Joking aside the hard drive is like your brain, its used to store information including operating system,

It is long term, high capacity storage. Most laptops, desktops and servers use them. (A very few run off a network or compact flash instead).

A hard drive is basically where you store everything...your operating system, and software applications and programs are saved to it. You can also save your pictures and music on there. Its a big digital storage bin basically. :)

It is where all your files are stored, so when you turn the computer off, all your music and pictures are still there the next time you turn it on!
