Heavy Metal refers to the beginning of the metal era - Bands including Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. This flows in to the 80's genre of metal with bands like Iron Maiden. Considering Led Zepplin heavy metal, then yes, I would say that there are Heavy Metal love songs.
Your friends may be refering to the more current genres of metal including death metal, nu metal, melodic metal, black metal... You would have to give some band name examples of what they are talking about to give a better idea if there are actually love songs in the specific genre.
