If you were in need, I would pick you up. If you were just walking I would presume you were just walking.
It is dependent, too. A woman with a child, a man in a kilt in a southern town, a person who obviously bathes and just needs a hand would all get a ride from me....
A man who was scruffy carrying a backpack would probably not get a ride unless I had a pickup truck...
Seriously, you cannot ever be too careful now. There are dangers lurking around every corner, and on ever street. The least dangerous looking person could be the one who is out to murder the next one who picks up a hitch hiker.
