3) Maintain sleep hygiene. Sleep enough, but not too much, and do it regularly.

These are the basics, and all supported by research.

4) Maintain a social network.
5) Regularly engage in activities you enjoy. Develop and practice new activities you enjoy.
6) Avoid decisions that will severely limit your opportunities to follow #1-5.

Depression is brought on by lots of things, some times we can't help the anxious feelings, there are several types, or categories of depression. Even active, social people have depression, usually caused by a chemical imbalance. Write out a list of things that give you the depressed feelings, and go about a real effort to change them..If this doesn't work there are support groups were you can talk about how you feel and why, next go to a reliable physician and get an evaluation, there are medications that help. Good luck to you.

That depends. Do you have a family history of depression? If you do, go to your doctor and learn some of the signs of depression so that if you do have an episode you know that you are having an episode instead of beating yourself up about it. If you do get depression, it's not so bad. I have it and have had it since I was 16 and I take Prozac everyday. It helps me control my emotions.
On the other hand if you don't have a family history of depression, don't worry. Just stay positive and don't be too hard on yourself when you make a mistake. Don't expect too much out of yourself either, you are only human like the rest of us. Be realistic and stay positive and you are sure to avoid depression. Good luck. If you every want to talk you are more than invited to email me. :)

It all depends on why you are depressed. I was depressed b/c I was in a bad auto accident where the person who was at fault died. It was really hard b/c I saw it & I felt it. I grieved alot, couldn't eat, sleep or work. So I went to a psychologist & talked to him. He recommended my doctor to prescribe me some anti-depressants & some sleep medicine. I took the medicine as directed & visiting w/him 4 times. And now it's been 2 months after I stopped both & I am just fine again. This may be something you need. Good luck & prayer also helps a great deal.

***EDIT*** This is for "July" who said depression is a sign of weakness.....apparently "July" has never experienced anything severe enough to cause depression...everyone needs to keep in mind depression comes in all forms.

Stop using any inebriating substances (IE alcohol, cocaine etc) if you are. Exercise and eat healthy, try to find a therapist. See your family doctor; that person can recommend antidepressants. There are also naturopathic herbs, such as nux vomica (go to a health food store), just to mention one. Meditation, yoga can be helpful. You might want to check out an Ayurvedic medicine (look it up on the net). And finally, and this is really important, remove yourself from the people or situation that is depressing you. Depression is a serious and major illness. Don't let it go unaddressed; it can ruin your health and kill. Look on the net and read more. I know people who've been there and it ain't easy to beat clinical depression.
