You haven't read that the government is trying to take away Christmas - because that isn't what the news story says.

The Institute of Public Policy Research has suggested that other religions' festivals be given public recognition too.

Quote from ITN News.

"If we are going to continue to mark Christmas - and it would be very hard to expunge it from our national life even if we wanted to - then public organisations should mark other major religious festivals too.

"Even-handedness dictates that we provide public recognition to minority cultures and traditions."

1. No one's trying to downgrade Christmas - the suggestion is that other religions' festivals be given public recognition.

2. It's a think tank. it's job is to come up with crazy "what if" proposals. Most are garbage, the occasional one is genius.

3. It's a public body, not necessarily a government (as in the party in government) supporting agency.

What! Are you actually defending the right to celebrate Christmas? Here, in Blackburn, East Lancashire, the misery merchants at the local council screwed Christmas up just to satisfy a few complaints from the mere "handful" of Muzzies who complained that the seasonal music being played over the market tannoy system was offensive during the time that they were also celebrating EID.

Off went the chrimbo music and up went a big banner stating, Eid El Mubarak! One **** complained about kiddies piggy banks!!!! The top and bottom of the issue is that there are far too many people pandering to the whims and fancies of those who would undermine other folks enjoyment to replace it with their own brand of selfishness. Personally, I cannot stand ignorance no matter what it is or where it comes from. I like to remember my family and friends at Christmas time and I do not expect anyone to spoil it through suffering the delusion that their methods and beliefs are the only legitimate way to celebrate the end of a calendar year.

Over commercialized it may be but watching the kids on Xmas morning is still a pure joy and I warn any Muzzy, Spook or Sand Coon not to interfere with this pleasure because then I would get uppity with you and lamp you with a ruddy great lump of wood. Go away, you make feel like vomiting.

Lets have all the religious festivals celebrated by public holidays for all denominations . Just think if we play our cards right we'll end up working about three days a year !

sounds like one of these media hypes to me - the government cannot stop you celebrating anything you like in your own home.

since labour are so good at thinking up new laws maybe they should make one that if the media makes a statement that isn't true - like the point in this question - then the paper/journalist/tv programme should be fined- that would put the morons at the sun out of business for a start.

if you can be jailed or fined for lying in a court of law then putting out lies to the public should also be illegal

So, you read something in a tabloid chat room that "a certain government group" is trying to abolish Christmas, and you thought it was for real? I hope you haven't received any emails from a kindly gentleman in Nigeria who is trying to cash a check for a million bucks, and will split it with you if you send him $25,000.

Suckers....there's one born every minute.

The best answer is if they wish to downgrade Christmas that they be evenhanded ans ban all religious festivals for all groups. that includes Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Etc. That would be fair. However as this is my country and we were converted to Christianity centuries ago so we have the right to continue as do the Indians in India, and Muslims in Saudi.

Good grief, this comes up from some little group all the time, don't worry-it will never happen. The government needs you to shop and keep the economy going.

"Downgrading" is not the same thing as "abolishing" and if you have any education beyond the second grade you should know that.

"Downgrade" means to reduce the extent of something.

"Abolish" means to eliminate it altogether or make it illegal. No one has suggested that, not even jokingly. The government doesn't even support downgrading. It was just a suggestion from one agency.

Reminds me of children. You can put cups of every color out for children to learn their colors and give them a choice and it's guarenteed.....they are going to fight over who gets what cup. You can do "lets take turns" and someone is going to cry "racism" or whatever because they weren't the first to pick....or "Sexism" because Tommy picked first...or "relegion" because a Christian picked first....you name it....someone's going to complain about it. Till eventually....the teacher picks 1 color and you don't get a choice anymore. Yet watch them.....next it will be who gets to their cup first is the "winner"....till no one can move until they are told. Next they'll fight coz the teacher stood by me first.....till eventually....there's no cups, no treats and nobody does anything but sit with their hands folded. Tolerance means putting up with things you don't like or agree with. If people don't wake up to that fact real darn soon.....nothing will be left. We'll all be nothing but mindless drones....wearing the same uniforms....same hair cut....eating the same food....hands folded nicely in total silence.

People need to get over being "offended" at every turn. Because they WILL loose all their rights as well.....eventually. Don't want a Christmas tree....don't buy one. Don't like this...don't look....don't want to listen...turn it off. Or else NONE of us will have a choice anymore....or any freedom anymore.
