It is Jay Walking. You are supposed to use marked crossing areas to cross the street. This is to make it so that cars have to watch for pedestrians only at certain points. Without making it illegal to cross in the middle of the street, people would be pretty much just wandering in an out of traffic at random spots and the odds of a car hitting someone would go up.

There are jay walking laws in most major cities. I do not know of states that make it law though.

there are designated areas pedistrians are supposed to walk. say for example at a light they have the sigh that tell you when to walk. the light turns green you go stop -dont walk. the road will be painted white for the area you are supposed to walk in.
if you cross the street say in the middle where there is no sigh or white on the road to walk that is considered j walking and you can get a ticket for it. Ive j walked plenty just never got caught. safety first, you know how that goes.

also in some states there rules are even more ridiculious than that. it is illegal to keep xmas light up year round. cant spit on the street or side walk. believe this...i forget what state but it is illegal to throw a pickkle in the street.

"j walking" is crossing the street a controlled intersection against the 'don't walk' signal.

Crossing the street between intersections is not 'j walking' per say, but is illegal in some states. On the other hand, if you are out in the country where there are no intersections for miles, I would think that rule does not apply.

Most States consider jaywalking as crossing anywhere except at crosswalks. The laws are not enforced much though. The exception is if you almost get hit while doing so and a cop sees you or if you do get hit.
