Your best bet is to admit responsibility and tell the judge you simply didn't see it, but you understand that you broke the law and ask for leniency. If you try to pull some cockamamie excuse or bad-mouth the police, or if you give the impression that you don't take your offense seriously the judge is going to HAMMER you. Judges have no patience for people who try to weasel their way out of a ticket or those who have an axe to grind. Be respectful, stand up straight, and take your lumps. If you behave like a responsible adult, most judges will cut you a break, especially if you don't have any other tickets on your record.

It's a judgement call on the officer that wrote the ticket. Better to pay it and save the court costs that will be tacked on if you try to fight it. Do you think the judge will believe you or the cop?
