allow frost to nip it good... so it shuts down and goes dormant.... then cut it off about 18 inches from the ground, with a steep angle to the cut.... now pile up leaves around the base of the stubs... that's it.... the length will protect the growing tip and the leaves will keep the ground from warming till it's time in spring.... remove the leaves and lay the trunks in an out of the way place to drain out the water that's in them.. and that's a LOT of water!!... once they are dried out, you can cut them up and dispose of them as you wish.....I leave mine on the ground behind the plants near the fence.... makes a good weed-stop.....
