Filming on the second X Files movie is to begin on 10 December, 20th Century Fox has announced.
The film will see David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprise their famous roles as alien-hunting FBI agents Mulder and Scully. Series creator Chris Carter will direct the as-yet unnamed film when production begins in Vancouver, Canada. The script, written by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz - who also co-wrote the first X-Files movie - is being kept a close secret. All that is being revealed is that it is a "supernatural thriller" and will develop the complicated relationship between Mulder and Scully.
First of all, just how the heck are you going to develop the relationship between Mulder and Scully? That's the first thing.
Secondly, why the feck do another X-files sequel after all this time? While I did like the first film myself, it wasn't hugely successful and it was released years ago anyway.
What's going on??

Aye, but has it really still got a big enough fanbase after all this time - do you really think so?

I dont think they'll ever "develop" the relationship between Mulder and Scully, doing so would ruin the dynamic.
As for why they need a sequel, well, I haven't heard much regarding Chris Carter in recent years, I think it's safe to assume his bank balance is a little low, mortgage to pay, kids to send to college etc and so he's revisiting his cash cow for "nostalgic purposes". That said, if it's good I won't be complaining!

Of course it is neccesary. And I'm sure the smallest problem to Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz is the development of the Mulder and Scully relationship. They are experts and know exactly how to give us what we want.
It's true that the first wasn't hugely successful. But who cares! The first Fantastic Four and Hulk weren't hugely successful either and they're doing sequels.
X-Files has always had a huge fan base and we are still out there waiting. We have done many petitions and projects to get the movie into production and we haven't got tired.
The movie won't be about the series mythology. So the people that isn't familiar with it won't have problems to understand it and enjoy it. It'll be a stand alone supernatural thriller. An intelligent scary movie which means exactly the opposite of most of the movies of the last couple of years.
Every fandom has its movie(s) done. Why x-philes don't deserve it?
And in these days of lots of crappy movies that are given huge budgets why don't give it a chance to a movie that is likely to be a very well done one because it's made by people that had proven to be not mediocre at all.

I thought they reolved their relationship in the final seasons and in the finale. I suspect this is a way to expand on it for the fans who were scratching their heads at it.
The series was pretty fantastic, and if they could keep the movie more paranormal and less government-conspiracy, it could be a fun summer thriller. They're bringing back the right writers, so that's a good start.
Why do studios feel the need to do another Rambo after all this time? Why another Indiana Jones? Why do we need a Sex in the City movie when the show is over?
I think the Barenaked Ladies were right: "Everything Old is New Again." Everything comes back sooner or later.

Well some people (i.e. rich/hollywood stoopid people) may never watch the show
the first movie did actually a good job
the show has made a lot of profit, and has in turned helped create die-hard fans.
so carter and spotnitz probably figure the best way to make the xfiles bigger is to explain in detail the relationship between mulder and scully
however I dont think its going to work. Its like the Batman series of movies. You know, they jumped back before the original to explain how he got all the gadgets and stuff, while I like Batman - I hate how every time a movie comes out they also have to come out with another tv show and a video game

Much to my surprise, I REALLY enjoyed the first X Files movie, and Im looking forward to the next one.
To your question - well, no. But is ANY sequel really "necessary"?
If you watched the series, the relationship between them was already starting to become established, so its not big leap to develop it even further.
The 1st movie made around $200 million worldwide at the box office alone, and god knows how much on DVD rental/sales and TV rights. Financially its viable to make a 2nd.
What's going on?? What do you care? If you dont want to see it, dont. But just because you dont think its a good idea, doesn't mean it isn't.

It has familiar characters with a built-in fanbase so they can have a moderate hit based on name recognition alone.
Any kind of story will work, especially because the show ended several years ago, and people probably would like another interesting case to solve.
