I was a nurse at a clinic for about 3 yrs from 1999-2002. The physician I worked for had a wife that called me at home one night and blabbed a bunch of their problems to me. It was very awkward and uncomfortable. Several months later, she accused me of having an "inappropriate" relationship with him which WAS NOT TRUE. I ended up getting fired for "insubordination" tho I never signed an incident report. I can't not put them on my resume' as it was a signifigant part of my employment with valueable skills. I found out from a potential employer that she had outright lied about me and my character, stating negligent nursing care, poor work ethic, etc. All damning charges in the healthcare field and they are not true. I was a very good employee there, loyal and hardworking. I have several other employers that give me great references but this one seems to be slandering me pretty viciously. Can she do this? What can I do to keep it from happening ?

The doctor seems to be willing to allow his wife to do and say whatever keeps her happy or quiet.(she has a long history of accusing him of infidelity) I called her and confronted her and she denied it.There have been other former employees who are going thru this because of her and the medical community is very clique-ish so if I tell them that she divulged alot of personal info ( that I politely tried to back out of hearing) and she became afraid that I would tell others in our small community so she tried to discredit me or make it appear like sour grapes. I am needing references from all previous employers for an application to an advanced nursing degree program.

***********His wife as are alot of other physicians spouses is the office manager, thus my "immediate supervisor" She really did nothing but stay in an office all day or kiss up to patients, but ALL reference checks go thru her.

**** I said references when I meant letters of reccomendation for the NP program. My previous employers impressions of me, my skills, etc have to be put in writing to be submitted with my application. The nurses who have the best letters and scores will be selected. It is not for a job this go around, it is for school. I can get a job easily but I look back on previous interviews that went well and see the correlation between them calling her and not calling me back.

The easiest way to handle this is to be upfront with potential new employers about what happened with this job. Don't go into details, just gloss over it by saying that you and the doctor's wife had a disagreement and she accused you of things that were untrue. Any logical person would realize that she must be lying if all of your other references are wonderful. The other option is to see if they can reach the doctor you worked for directly for a reference instead of his wife or is there someone else that you worked with at the clinic that can give you a reference? Really your best bet is just to try and avoid this woman. Good luck!

It is difficult to pursue a legal course of action with circumstantial proof and hearsay evidence. You could always hire somebody with a wire and see if the person could elicit such response from the wife.

By your description it sounds as if she is making a great case for you to take her to court through slander which is a federal law in the U.S. so you could make a court case on her

In your resume I would not included contact #'s or names of former bosses, instead just say "references furnished upon request". When you do supply them, leave these people off!!

You lost me... Just what does the WIFE have to do with you getting another job? If her HUSBAND is the one that you worked for, then what does she matter?

What she is saying, if it isn't true, is libel and slander, and you can sue for that (defamation of character), especially if this is causing you from getting another job. She should be able to prove her accusations...

Sue. If she if providing false information then you can sue the former employer.
