I suspect that hot water can flow ,through the valve, ;in extreme cases of pressure differences; , when I set it for cold water only. My gas water heating bill magically jumped-up by 15% by simply up-dating to single lever faucets! Has anyone else experienced this?

Sickle seller I'm not that unconscience and my next step is to install a water-out meter on top of the water heater outlet allong with handle path guideways that restrict handle movement to one direction only. This will take your theory out of the question ,as a secondary consideration, to my carefully conducted experiment.

no it only has lets hot or cold mix if you have it in the middle there are 4 valves inside the round ball there bellow the single handle 2 let in a mix of hot and cold the other two just let in hot and cold there are also springs inside there that when you turn it on and move the handle the springs get the pressure and open the valve if they are worn then the faucet will leak like crazy mostly hot water

I really do not think that is your problem. If anything it may be a leak from installing the new faucet.
The faucet has a ball valve inside it that controls hot and cold water. If it was getting past the valve it would be coming out the faucet.
Look elsewhere for the increase in your bill like and increase in rates.

Most single handled faucets have cartridges in them. They operate with springs and "O" rings. You may have gotten faucets that were built with faulty parts. Only way to know is to disassemble them and check. There is no pressure difference in hot and cold water unless you are using a boiler for hot water. The pressure of hot water is controlled by the pressure of the cold water pushing it out of the water heater.

I've seen several single handle faucets in the bathtubs of our hotel that were installed incorrectly and when opened to the cold side, only hot water would come out, and the cold would be on the hot side. But you would already know it if that were your problem.

Even if you did have a leaky valve, it's hard to imagine that adding 15% to your energy bill. In my area (Northern California) the gas company will come to your house and do a free energy audit. I would suggest you call your local gas company and maybe they can help pinpoint the reason for the spike.

maybe you kept turning the tap on to prove your hypothesis...and in the process you used the tap more than you previously did so it increased your bill
