He had issues with Spock, which I think were more-or-less resolved by the end of Star Trek III (the movie). Yea, I wish the writers would get more into whyhe seemed constantly PO'ed. Maybe in the upcoming ST XI...?

Hollywood writers need to write shows that will appeal to a diverse set of people and backgrounds. Here's a futuristic sci-fi show about space travel in this huge space ship called the enterprise. In 1960's America and through the mid 1980's I noticed many people who had a tech phobia. They insisted that computers and hi-tech electronics were meant for the world of industry and not the American home.
As such, I think having an anti-tech crewman such as McCoy - "I'm just an old country doctor" - was meant to appeal to the older and more traditinonal Americans more interested in a good story than in the futuristic sci-fi angle.

It was a writing style. His character's emotions was the opposite of Spock's. McCoy wasn't always cranky, but he was very emotional.

It was never really addressed, but I think he was truly afraid of space travel. We know he hated the transporter, and I think the whole concept of "going where no man has gone before" was a little more than he was prepared for when he joined Star Fleet.

He thought of himself as " just an old country doctor ", his own words. he was not comfortable with the technology " doing his job. He was happy when he had the opportunity to find cures for all the unknown conditions and deseases they encountered but the routine of being chief medical officer was not personally fufulling.
P.S. He only got laid twice.

Maybe he was just tired of all the trekies he encountered who acted like they didn't have a clue that it was just a show, not real life. hmm.
