Labor starts on its own when the baby is ready to come out. Whatever the mysterious internal trigger is, no one knows.

But it is certainly not stuff like castor oil, taking walks and having intercourse. Those things have been proven to cause diarrhea and cramps and contractions, but not true labor.

Most women try stuff like this around their due date (or later) and so when they go into labor they think it was the home remedy when it was just a coincidence.

The best thing for you to do is to stay active and build your endurance for labor by walking and doing squats and kegels, and then also get adequate rest.

I'm assuming you're full term. None of these methods should be attempted prior to 37 weeks and even then you should wait until 40 weeks before trying to jumpstart things (let baby bake as long as possible!). Congrats mama-to-be!

Natural Induction Methods:
1. Sex - a chemical in semen can get the body to start having contractions.
2. Nipple stimulation - roll nipples between thumb and forefinger for 2 minutes. Rest for 3 minutes, then repeat the process for 20 minutes total.
3. Exercise - the more active you are, the more likely your body will get things started regularly (I know exercise doesn't sound appealing that far along!)
4. Spicy food - a lot of women swear by Indian and other spicy foods.

There are herbs to help, and some folks swear by acupuncture. Don't use herbs without consulting your OB, as some can have some unwanted side effects (such as castor oil, which will give you some pretty bad diarhea if you aren't careful).

The only natural way to start contractions is to let your body naturally start them! Anything else you do to try to make it happen would be artificial.

I know it's cliche, but sex, walking, any good old household chores, physical activity in general. I was scrubbing the floor the night before my son was born!
