The state of Kansas is named after the Native American tribe of the kansas nation. Arkansas is named after the Arkansas tribe Which is the french pronuciation of the Quapaw word for the down river people The pronunciation "arkansaw" was made official by an act of the state legislature in 1881.Arkansas is the only state to specify the pronunciation of its name by law. This is in response to residents of Kansas who used to pronounce the state's name as ar-KANSAS

wow that G S guy, he's smart. so my question is, if someone from Kansas goes to Arkansaw and calls it Arkansas instead of Arkansaw, do they get arrested? And btw, I would have answered that people from Arkansas have to pronounce it tht way because of their lack of teeth. But, you know. It's up to interpretationaw..
