Captain Picard of course.

Kirk seemed more interested in war mongering. He was the George Bush of space.

Picard was courageous, intellectually honest, ethical, calm and always in control.

Kirk... he just joined starfleet to kiss pretty aliens and punch ugly ones. It's hard to imagine him getting promoted past ensign.

They were both good, Kirk's era was entirely different than Picard's, the writers called for Kirk to be melodramatic and he was superb at this. Picard was the epitome of a quick thinking Star Ship Captain. Both are superb actors, but I vote for Picard. "Make It So."

Naval Bureaucracies do not award the command of capital ships to young "*** kickers" like Kirk. They may get a frigate. More likely they'll get an F15. Commanding officers of strategic assets have to be level headed individuals who aren't likely to start a war on their own initiative. Picard was the very picture of the type of officer that would be chosen for a major command.

picard was a p u s s y who relied on diplomacy, which only works on tv, because the script says it works. it doesnt work in real life. kirk could give an a s s kicking when it was warranted

Well, Patrick Stewart was definitely the better actor. And ST:TNG had a longer run for him to mature as a character. God knows the first season of ST:TNG was among the worst TV ever produced -- thank God they got better as they went along. Sadly, Shatner never DID get any better -- he sucked from start to finish, and 7 movies and 3 other TV series did nothing to help that.

Picard of course.
There's something about bald men.......hmm.
Oh, and he's a classically trained actor as well.

I go with Kirk. Young, brash, shoot-first-then-ask-questions, never let what's legal keep you from doing what's right..... Just your 23rd century Chuck Norris with a spaceship....

Hands down - Kirk. He got the job done, and now. No diplomacy needed, no convincing. No "to be continued" episodes. (Okay, maybe one).
