The best thing to happen to computers is the On/Off switch.
Okay, now that I've got that off my chest. . . .
I think that one of the great bits of software is the Google Desktop Search application.
Another good thing to that has happened to computers is the USB port. Sure, it's no longer a new technology, but it's a great one.
Another great thing that has happened to the Desktop computer is 64-bit CPUs. I'd prefer it if the powers that be would stop holding back emerging technologies so that they can reap revenue on each one for the maximum amount of time before unleashing the next technology.
The best thing that has happened to the Internet has not occurred yet.
I do agree with Jim Maryland, for the reasons that he specified below:

Google is great , for sure , but lets not forget the primary
source responsible for the incredible explosion of all these
unbelievable advancements in technology that we've been
witness to over the last ten years . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . CRASHED ALIEN CRAFTS !
No joke , I'm bein' serious ! There is plenty of evidence
out there that supports this theory , told by many highly-
educated and highly respected scientists , physiscists ,
electrical engineers , and the like.
If you think that's crazy nonsense , then honestly ask your-
self "why" it's crazy and impossible , for it to be possible !
"Cuz we'd have found out about it by now" , . . . . . right ?
"Because our leaders and the all-powerful military industrial
complex wouldn't have been able to keep such things so
secret all these years w/out things leaking out" , . . . right ?
Use this fabulous & remarkable technology that is ,'The Internet' ,
to Investigate for yourself. You'll find that in fact , they can keep
information secret and away from the masses , most of the time ,
but not all the time ! And the information , proof , witnesses ,
etc. , has been , and still is , openly accessible to anyone !
You just have to read between the lines - And Question things
that don't add up. . . . . . . . . . . rather than buying whatever
"Bill-Of-Goods" they're selling.
Study history - - - for it shows that throughout the ages , and
going back hundreds of years , governments have routinely
kept secrets from their people , . . . . . .and with great success !
For HUNDREDS OF YEARS , entire civilizations & populations
believed their kings & queens when they said that the world
was flat. The magnitude of that lie , certainly rivals , if not
surpasses , any alien technology info. , . . . . . . or the lack
there-of.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . WOULDN'T YOU AGREE !

Before I get marked down, please read the reasons for my answer...
porn
Historically porn has been an early adopter of many different mediums for content delivery (VHS, DVD, Internet). The industry actively supports content rights, compression techniques, content streaming/presentation, secure payments, etc...
While it is the darker side of the Internet, it does do a lot to drive development.
If you exclude porn, then I'd have to say collaboration and socialization technologies like wikis, blogs, myspace, facebook, youtube, etc... The exchange of ideas in an open forum is amazing.

I don't think Google is that helpful.
I would say the best thing that has happened to internet or computers is that you can pay your bills online easily with the click of a button.
