Lowe's performance cannot be properly rated for a couple years since he's acquired so much young talent. If guys like Penner (signed as restricted), Smid (part of the Pronger trade), Nilsson (part of the Smyth trade), and Pitkanen (part of the Lupul-Smith trade) don't pan out, one could then legitimately question Lowe's abilities.

As for MacTavish, he should be judged mainly on one thing: are the young guys improving under his regime. If the answer is no, what's the point of keeping him as coach since the team is in the process of rebuilding?

Lowe has done a fairly decent job in Edmonton. Lots of young talent and a number of those are/were number one picks. He has let a few vets go down the road, but has replaced them with the young guys. Sure some of the things he has done and has tried to do. raised some eyebrows, but overall, I think in a couple of years everyone will be impressed with the 'Oil.
I am far from an Oil fan but I want to see the good old Battle of Alberta back!

Edmonton has a payroll over 48.5 million with alittle over 1.5 million of cap space is a glaring error in your thought process. Another is that GM's work on a budget, you can call an owner cheap but a GM/ coach is nonsense.
Edmonton is in a rebuilding process. You can bring in Scotty Bowman to be coach and GM and the team is still what the team is. They are not going anywhere and the fans need to be patient.

Think you better get of the soapbox. Seems the masses disagree with you. Lowe has a huge stockpile of young talent. His maneuvers aren't as apparent as they may seem but he has something like 7 first rounders playing for him and a couple more in the minors. He also had such an abundance of extra picks that he could take a stab at trying to get an RFA who might have some impact. I think Buffalo matching the Vanek offer will be a long term blessing because Penner will still be visible and present when the hockey gets real during the playoffs. And he already has one cup win on his resume. Scooping Garon may yet prove to work out for him as well. Second guess if you choose but I think for the most part your exaltations shall fall on unsympathetic ears.

Kevin Lowe is cheap?

He offered Vanek $10MM
He offered Penner $4.5MM
He outbid several teams (and overpaid) for Souray

Oh, and Lowe himself is one of the highest paid GMs, and McTavish, is unofficially the 5th highest paid coach (unofficially because the NHL does not legally have to release non-player salaries and what teams report are usually far from the truth)

That is true, but at the same time you can also go to 75 Oilers games for the price of ONE Leafs game.

They will put up with it as long as they have to. Unfortunately the fans can't fire anybody or else Mr. Bettman would have been gone a long long time ago.

I think the team is in good shape, but I don't know how long he will last.
