There are two schools of thought regarding lights on:
1. Light up after Thanksgiving
2. Light up the first of December
--
If you have a LOT of lights to put out, then start now. Thanksgiving is early this year and if you want to light up on Black Friday, you need to start now.
I put up about 25,000 lights and will start in earnest this weekend.

December 1st or right after Thanksgiving I would think. Not before. I like driving along and seeing the lights during the whole month. I put up my decorations after Thanksgiving but that week-end as I have time off then to take my time and do it. Otherwise, I'd have to do it a little bit each week-end and that is too crazy - boxes all over the place.

Usually, people put them up on Thanksgiving...personally, I think somewhere in the first few days of December is a better time because it's closer to Christmas. That's what bums me out about Christmas these days, people start the season way to early, like they're trying to "get it over with" or something. Seriously, I heard a Christmas song on the radio in August. Sad.

Day after Thanksgiving is very popular, although some people wait until December starts. A few wait until just before Christmas, but they are definitely in the minority.
In our neighborhood (not overly gaudy), I'd say people are split about half-and-half between day after T'giving and December 1st. The day after T'giving has the advantage of being a day most people are home from work.

We usually do it the first week in december, gives a chance for people to look at them before christmas, because they go down right after the new year.

If you are interested in Christmas as tradition - the Christian festival - then surprise your neighbours by leaving it till Christmas Eve and then leave them up for the 12 days till Epiphany.
Otherwise, whenever as it then doesn't signify anything except how much you can afford to spend on lights and electricity - and, I trust, carbon offsetting.

Depends where you live. In a cold climate end of November after U.S. Thanksgiving. Down South ,no rush; wait until about two weeks before Christmas.
