I have a question about LCD drivers. Are they really much different than CRT drivers?

I am asking about drivers. I'm actually looking for someone who has designed/programmed LCD drivers, but wanted to make sure there was a difference between LCD and CRT.

Monitors do not have a driver in the true sense, unless you use the plug and play driver, which is the sensible thing to do.

A monitor 'driver' is an INF file. This has some basic information in it about the name of the display, the resolution, the vertical and horizontal refresh rates supported. There is no extra or missing data between a CRT INF file or an LCD INF file.

The plug and play (EDID or DDC) information in the monitor itself is actually much more detailed than the information in the INF file. It is a much better idea to use the plug and play driver over a monitor 'driver'.

About the only exception to this is colour correction. The INF file should load a colour correction ICM file. However, since colour correction is dependent upon the system, your lighting, the brightness and contrast settings, and will vary from monitor to monitor (especially for CRTs) it is only a slight improvement and, IMHO, not worth it.

If you want colour correction, get a quality monitor and then get a Spyder, a Huey, or some such equipment to do the job for your monitor in your location with your system and your settings.

Most LCDs use a generic LCD driver.
And yes the drivers are different, but if you have an internet connection, using an LCD will not be a problem as your operating system will automatically download the proper drivers for your new monitor.

Drivers - are the software that runs the communication between your OS and the hardware.

Are you asking about the difference between the drivers or the actual display? =)
