I started getting a cold last week, when the weather went from 75 and sunny to 50's and dreary. It started out with the typical stuff - sore throat, small cough, lost a little of my voice. About 3 days later, it started going away, and I thought that was it. Well, it's been a week since then, and I've still got the cough. I have tried everything. It always gets worse when we go to bed at night, and I either wind up staying up another 1/2 hour to 45 min trying to stop, or wake up later for the same time period doing nothing but coughing. Now, this is bad enough on it's own, but I'm only getting about 5 hours of sleep because of it, and that is just not enough for me. I wind up going to bed around 1 a.m. when I have to get up at 6. I cannot even lay down for a nap, because by the time I stop coughing, it's time to get back up. I've done everything I can think of to get this to go away, with no avail....Any suggestions??? I would really appreciate any help! Thank you...

You said you have done everything? Have you seen a doctor? Sometimes residual coughs need a little help to clear. A doctor might give you a prescription strength decongestant or cough suppressant, or he might give you a steroid based cough solution, or even a one time shot of steroid. Don't be frightened of the word steroid....one of the most effective medications to alleviate respiratory problems. If you can't get rid of it on your own, then it is time to see a doctor.

It is not uncommon for a cough to hang on after the cold has gone away. What has happened is that the cold irritated your lungs and the cough is the result. The problem is that sometimes you get a feedback cycle happening. The lungs are irritated, so you cough. The cough irritates things more. So you cough more. And so on. Given how bad your cough sounds, I think this is what has happened. Go see a doctor, they will give you an inhaler that will soothe the lungs down and will eventually stop the cough. Be aware, the inhaler probably isn't cheap, but it will help!

I get this every year, go to the doctor and get antibiotics they take a few days to kick in but you'll be better. Also, stay home and rest, the more sleep u get the better because u don't caugh in ur sleep and ur throat gets a chance to heal. I know this might sound lame but try not to caugh, if u feel like u have to just don't, the less u caugh the less ur throat will be irritated.

Sounds like a chest infection, steriods and a dose of antibotics for about 5 days will shift it.

There's no sure fire ways of getting rid of a cough. I would ask for a prescription for something with codeine. It may help or may not.
