...despite the vagueness of the storyline, the only other thing that comes to mind, is the movie poster; it shows a black human-shaped silhouette, surrounded by a bright light, that faded to darker colors, toward the outside of the poster...
...anyone heard of this???

...the plot that you described could have applied to about a dozen other films, but when you mentioned that movie poster, the bells and whistles in my head went off; you're talking about the 1984 supernatural chiller, "The Power"...
