The question is more what do you consider "animal research". That topic is so extremely wide that it covers a million and one things. Animal research can be as drastic as testing on live animals, to performing a necropsy on something that has died (on its own), to even studying animals without even laying a finger on them (more observational studies on wild populations).
So like I said, it really depends on how you define animal research. If you stand there and preach that it is wrong to test vaccines on lab rats then run out and get the same vaccine yourself then yes, it is hypocritical.
To boot there is also a wide range of "animal testing". There are many who oppose testing for beauty items (shampoo, make-up, etc) but fully back testing when it comes to the development of medicine.
I had a conversation the other day who was going on and on about how wrong all of animal testing was and that it did no good for humans or animals. I said even taking human gains out of the picture that vets have made huge strides in caring for both domestic and exotic animals through testing and different experiments. I asked him if he had a dog and if he had ever taken his dog to the vet for a check-up or meds (heart worm, etc). He of course said yes. In turn I said "well how do you think they developed the drugs and procedures that your vet used... without some form of testing all of that stuff would have never been created/developed". He still has yet to respond.
Anyway, I ramble.
Like I said it really depends on what you consider animal "research" and animal "testing" to be. The best advice I can give is if you are talking about this subject with people (or doing a school paper) is to just be as clear as possible. Because both are so wide in what they can be you can really shoot yourself in the foot to say animal research is wrong or animal testing is wrong.
For example... I am not for animal testing when it comes to beauty based goods, however I am for testing when it is a live saving/helping drug/procedure and no other testing options are possible.
Animal testing and research can be a WONDERFUL thing but on the flip side it can also be a nasty an unneeded practice.

animal testing can have disasterous effects, but no one seems to remeber this. other animals do not have the same physiology as humans. drugs have been approved and then killed people...ie vioxx or thalidimide. i have heard many researchers say how unreliable it is and is considered by some to be down right dangerous or a waste of time and money. there is always a flip side, but everyone seems ok with going with the cliche stance of " no for cosmetics, yes for medicine". its not that simple. not only that, many researching facilities like auburn university and oregon have been busted by the USDA and found guilty of animal cruelty in their labs. i think it is hypocritical to use animal tested medicines, but im not going to down on someone for doing it, i just hope that more and more scientists will start using models and more reliable methods for testing

I guess it depends on the perspective. A lot of people who oppose animal testing are ignorant to the wide variety of benefits and vaccines they themselves use/have used that have resulted from testing on animals. In those situations, I guess to them - ignorance is bliss - but to others who are knowledgeable regarding how the vaccines came to be.. it appears hypocritical.
Also - you have to consider the context of "animal research." If you're talking purely medical - then yes, opposing it yet enjoying the benefits would be hypocritical.
If you're being a little more generic, and you're including testing for cosmetics, and other generic research that doesn't really have solid justification, I think it's reasonable to oppose UNNECESSARY animal testing but agree with medical research; thus, in that case, it wouldn't be hypocritical, it would be logical.
