Aspirin is a sodium salt of acetosalasylic acid. In humid conditions, the ester link is broken and acetic acid is formed.

i never knew that aspirin could spoil.... doesn't sound good though. I've had aspirin that was a few years old and I never noticed a smell.

I've seen some pretty old aspirin, and I've never smelled anything...are you sure it was the aspirin?
