Hmm. Let's see, if I'm hated, then at least I'm getting some attention, if ignored none. You could pose this question to a tiny infant. Every infant will answer the same: some attention is better than no attention. We need love, even if the only form that love can take is one of hatred, we'll take that because it's better than staying totally alone and in the dark.
This is the reason why people confined to a room or on a deserted island for a long time usually go crazy, it's from lack of human contact.
