I have actually never heard of any of those movies, so I don't think they're known around the globe.
All a story has to do is be generalized enough to appeal to everyone. Everyone has had a romance gone wrong, so that type of film appeals to many people. People like to be intellectually stimulated, so a psychological thriller is generally appealing.
Not every movie appeals to every person, but movies tend to show conflict and triumph, which is something everyone experiences, so we can all enjoy them.

Films tend to play on people's emotions. KANK, Chak de India reflect the real issues or trends. Many of us have had similar experiences or have had similar feelings and hence can relate to them. So sometimes the characters or the plots bring out the vicarious feelings and other times they match some of our hidden fantasies (am referring to Koi mil gaya n its sequel).
